Sparrow Cafe

Along with an eye-catching logo on a restored brick building at the corner of Penn and 50th, Jasper and Sheila (Ryan) Rajendren’s Sparrow Café features coffee from the best artisan roasters, locally sourced baked goods and welcoming windows that let in the light and showcase an art-filled space.

Jasper’s experience managing restaurants and Sheila’s passion for baking led them to open Sparrow in 2013.  Working with roasters who share their values, Sparrow is committed to fair trade and eco-friendly practices. More than a nod to the café’s name, their bird-friendly coffee is Smithsonian-certified, shade-grown, organic coffee – a certification that helps migratory birds and promotes a better environment.

Much thought went into choosing a name for their dream cafe. “Sparrows get a bad rap,” says Jasper. “I like them. They’re urban birds with a sense of unity.” Much like the neighborhood’s customers who flock to Sparrow for the coffee and stay for the company.
